Most people in urban residential areas don’t have access to green fields and soil for farming, so they do not grow food and therefore they have to rely on markets and shops to supply them with fresh and edible products. Fruits, vegetables, dairies and similar products are used in our daily meals and they are recommended by all doctors and medical studies. Even though we do not listen to them as much as we should, since we do not eat enough fruits and vegetables on a general level, most people try to eat as much of these fresh products as possible. However, in recent years, a new force has appeared on the global market, and this “cult” is known as organic farming or organic foods. To be more precise, those ideas have existed for a long time now and they were present all over the world, but in the past they were predominantly used by “eccentrics” and “weirdos”, while nowadays we have a completely different situation.
In today’s world, organic foods have almost gone mainstream and they are present everywhere, from the media to your neighborhood shop. It is basically impossible to escape from their reach and with increased presence and strong marketing campaign, this type of food is taking over the globe. That is the reason why many scientists and nutrition experts are conducting excessive research and perform studies to see what advantages we get from using organic foods. The problem is that all studies are having a short-term effect, or do not last long enough to be relevant for a longer period, which is a fact that is perhaps the most important element for majority of users.
However, there are some advantages and disadvantages that have been established and universally recognized as valid, so we can list some of them here. For instance, when it comes to pros of using organic foods, most experts agree that this type of products has fewer pesticides, and has no growth hormones or chemical fertilizers. Since they are grown in conventional manner, these types of foods are more friendly for the environment, which is very important to all of those people who are involved with organic farming and the protection of the environment through principles of permaculture and sustainable living. Additionally, taste is also an advantage of organic foods, since this type of food is usually fresh and doesn’t travel half way around the globe to get to your market place.
Disadvantages of organic foods are basically concerned with logistics and the transportation aspects of this type of production, since it is clear that organic foods have to be used on a seasonal pattern. Due to the fact that this type of production doesn’t allow any modification to genetic code of the plants for example, it is hard to expect that you will have fresh tomatoes at your table in the middle of the winter. Also, another argument that is often used against organic farming is that it is more expensive. This is perhaps true in most cases, and there are several reasons for this fact, but it is not clear if this is a disadvantage or not, since, paradoxically, people are sometimes attracted to more expensive things because they believe that they have better quality, even if it is not necessarily so.
